The Sphagnum Experiment
I mentioned this in the "Making Babies" Propagation thread, but I'm trying a few leaves in long staple sphagnum moss. A bale of it seems to have wandered into my basement. You find the darnedest...

I checked my leaves in sphagnum today. Tommie Lou is now more firmly rooted; when I tugged, it didn't come up. One of the little Optimaras is also rooted. However O. Little Ottawa isn't well rooted...

Maybe it also depends on how tightly you pack the moss? On my mounted violet experiment, I wet the moss, squeezed the extra water out, put a mound on the bark and wrapped two elastic bands around it....

I think it's fairly loose in there, Lauren, since I can poke the stems in and out easily. It may just be that the leaf wasn't so good in the first place although it had been living on the plant for...

Still rather mixed results on the sphagnum except for the improvement in my spelling :). Tommie Lou is solidly rooted and Little Ottawa started getting roots so I quit messing with it. The twin of the...

Since the aptly named Dandelion Cat had made a horrible mess of my O. Tennessee, I looked at it and decided to take it back to the very center. It just hasn't been recovering. I think I already have a...

I did a check on my sphagnum leaves. I'd let one get dry and hope I caught it in time. This is one bad thing - when it gets dry, it really gets dry. I'm not sure if some of it is getting a little mold...

It's been 9 days since I posted. I did splash a bit of water on them one day, but today I pulled the saucer out and checked. Both leaves of Little Cherokee have babies. Little Ottawa is getting...

I start feeding mine as soon as I see mouse ears. They need nutrients, that same as large plants. I use the same ratio as for my regular plant, but I only use it once in awhile, rather than every time.

I suppose that is right. I don't know why I thought sphagnum would be any different. Thanks, Anabel. They grow off the mother for awhile I think though although a little fertilizer boosts them. Diana...

I recently received a leaf order with multiple extra leaves and thought it would be a great chance to do a better experiment with sphagnum. Admittedly when a there seemed a better leaf, I set them in...

Diana, I tried it a couple of years ago and for me it did not work as well as my regular mix, they grew roots but never produced mouse ears. I gave up and put them all in cups with mix.

It's too bad in a way because it was way easier to set them in it. It seems like when they take, they do well enough. The failure rate has been much higher for me though. Thanks for your input. I have...

It is much easier to put them down that way, but unfortunately doesn't seem to work as well. I currently have a bunch of hanging bags to save space, I put the solo cups in bags and then use a bent...

I wasn't so big on duplicates before this kitty came along. Now I seem to think I need backups of everything :) Sometimes it is a good idea but I don't know where to put them either. Tommie Lou grew...

I took the babies off the leaves that were in the sphagnum and one interesting thing is that they had produced far more than in my regular mix. They weren't very big or strong, but I didn't have them...

Just a quickie update on this. I set so many leaves and overbought plants that I've been having a hard time keeping up. However they will get sorted out eventually. There are many duplicate babies and...
